Nanban

Maverick director S. Shankar is ready with his next venture titled as Nanban. A remake of the Bollywood blockbuster 3 Idiots, Nanban will be the first remake project for Shankar in Tamil. 'Ilayathalapathy' Vijay plays the lead role in the film and Nanban marks the first collaboration of Vijay and Shankar.

The film also features important roles from Jeeva, Srikanth, Ileana D'Cruz and Sathyaraj. Supporting cast comprise of S. J. Suryah, Sathyan, Kishore, Anuya Bhagvath, Manobala and Lawrence Raghavendra amongst others.

Nanban has Vijay playing an engineering college student with out of the box ideas and a craving for knowledge rather than marks. Jeeva and Srikanth play his close buddies in college. Vijay's character believes that the success in studying is not achieved by memorizing the textbooks but by understanding and applying the concepts. The three friends enter the bad book of the college dean, played by Sathyaraj, as the professor's of the college couldn't agree with the approach of Vijay's character. Meanwhile Vijay's character get into a romantic relationship with the dean's daughter played by Ileana. Nanban tells a fun filled story about the lives of the these characters in the college campus.

Nanban is produced by Raju Easwaran under the banner of Gemini Film Circuit. Music of Nanban has been composed by Harris Jayaraj who reunites with Shankar after Anniyan in 2005. Manoj Paramahamsa handles the camera and editing is by Anthony.

Original story of the film was written by Abhijat Joshi and Rajkumar Hirani based on the novel 'Five Point Someone' by Chetan Bhagat. Screenplay of Nanban is by S. Shankar and Madhan Karky.

Nanban is scheduled to be a Pongal release, expected to be released on January 12, 2012.
